About the program

Between love
and death

For this program we wanted to look closer — not only in a spatial or geographical sense, but also a personal one — seeking to evoke, through music, moments and emotions that are recognisable to us all as our own.

In that gaze we also crossed paths with the poetry we feel as our own, and memory led us to the book of poems by Rafael Alberti, "Entre el Clavel y la Espada". Written during his first months of exile in Paris, this collection — like the works we present — moves between two antagonistic universes: love and death.

When choosing the works, it was inevitable to think of Manuel de Falla, fellow countryman of Alberti and his companion in exile in Argentina. From his entire repertoire, what better than "El Amor Brujo" to be part of the proposal?

The fact that the libretto, although officially attributed to Gregorio Martínez Sierra, was actually written by his wife — the great writer María de Lejárraga — was a further reason for its inclusion in the program: our ensemble will never miss the opportunity to delve into female creativity.

About the ensemble

Quinteto Casulana

An ensemble born in 2008 at the initiative of a group of female musicians from different professional backgrounds: the symphonic world and teaching.

Its name pays tribute to Maddalena Casulana, one of the first female composers in the history of Western music who was able to see her work published during her lifetime.

One of its main objectives is the recovery and dissemination of music written by female composers, performing in their programs works by Sofia Gubaidulina, Grażyna Bacewicz, Mel Bonis, Louise Héritte-Viardot and Amy Beach, among many others.

Quinteto Casulana has received advice from internationally renowned artists such as Imre Rohmann (Mozarteum of Salzburg), István Gulyás (Franz Liszt Academy of Budapest) and Rivka Golani (Trinity College of Music of London).

It has performed in venues such as the Palau de la Música de València — where it has participated on several occasions within its Chamber Music Cycle —, the José Luis Perales Auditorium in Cuenca and the Lauderdale House in London. Its trajectory also includes recitals in various Italian cities (Acquaviva delle Fonti, Lecce) and participation in relevant festivals and cycles: Festival Mujeres en la Música de Getxo, Serenates cycle of the Universitat de València, International Music Festival of Llutxent, Spanish Brass Festival of Alzira (BALZ), Chamber Music Cycle Vicent Garcés of Faura, Summer Festival of Torreblanca, International Chamber Music Week of Montserrat.

In 2018 they received the Clara Campoamor d’Alaquàs Award in recognition of their work in the recovery and dissemination of music by female composers.
